About

The Rational Creatures blog was created out of love for the writings of so many of my brilliant friends. Some have more time to write than others, or more inspiration than others, so I thought – why not ask if these fabulous women (and maybe a few men?) would consider gathering their work together in one place? Katie suggested what would ultimately become the blog’s name. It’s from Jane Austen’s Persuasion, and the full quote is this:

“But I hate to hear you talking so like a fine gentleman, and as if women were all fine ladies, instead of rational creatures. We none of us expect to be in smooth water all our days.” – Mrs. Croft

Mrs. Croft was a woman of her time, but was also an adventurer, sailing the world with her Navy Admiral husband. She knew a little something about rough waters. The women who are writing here are all many things as well: actors, businesswomen, teachers, patients, mothers, daughters, experts, bread-winners, and thousands more occupations. We will talk about life’s waters, whether smooth or rough, and will do so with honesty and not a little humor.

I hope you enjoy reading!
